The digital world has opened up new opportunities for volunteering on exciting projects in far-flung places. You can set your own schedule, share specialized skills and choose from a wide variety of organizations that need your help. Here are a few recent opportunities:
-Transcribing a historian's discussion of Thelonius Monk for the Smithsonian
-Counting cells on images of modern and fossil leaves to track climate change for the National Museum of Natural History
-Transcribing diaries and personal accounts of the Civil War for a Penn State Libraries project
-Classifying the sounds babies make for a Psycholinguistics project being conducted through the Max Planck Institute, Paris Sciences and Letters Institute, and Babylab
This program gives you an orientation to virtual volunteering. If you have computer skills, you can get started on a project right away. Don't have computer skills? Come anyway! We can talk about the possibility of pairing with other volunteers to collaborate.
